How to Choose Colourful Contemporary Art for Your Home: Why the Right Painting Changes a Room

There is a moment I love when someone finds a painting they connect with.

They don't always know why.

Sometimes they stop in front of it and say, “I don't know what it is, but I keep coming back to it.”

That is usually the painting.

Because choosing contemporary art for your home isn't really about filling an empty wall.

It's about finding something that makes the room feel more like you.

For me, choosing contemporary art for your home is less about finding something that matches your interiors and more about finding something that brings the room to life.

And for many of us, especially as we move into our 40s, our homes start to become less about impressing other people and more about reflecting the life we've built.

The colours we love.
The places we've travelled.
The people we love.
The risks we've taken.
The version of ourselves we're becoming.

That is why I believe the right piece of colourful contemporary art can do something a beautiful piece of furniture can't.

It can tell a story.

Your walls are not just walls

I often think of a home as a little like a person.

The furniture is the bones.

The lighting is the mood.

The textures are the personality.

And the art?

The art is the voice.

It is the part that says something.

Maybe it's bold and colourful because you want your home to feel joyful.

Maybe it's quiet and layered because you're craving calm.

Maybe it's energetic and expressive because you're finally giving yourself permission to take up space.

Your walls are one of the biggest blank canvases in your home.

Why leave them saying nothing?

I don't paint for beige walls

My work is vibrant, layered and full of movement.

I use oil, charcoal, inks, modelling paste, spray paint and whatever else helps me get the feeling onto the canvas.

There are drips.

There are scribbles.

There are marks that aren't supposed to be perfect.

And there are moments where the painting feels almost too much.

That's usually when I know I'm getting somewhere.

Because I don't want my paintings to simply coordinate with your sofa.

I want them to wake something up.

Joy.

Freedom.

Wonder.

Courage.

Connection.

The feeling of being completely alive.

My philosophy has become simple:

I make vibrant, colourful reminders to live fully and connect deeply.

And that changes the way I think about art in an interior.

I'm not trying to create something that disappears into the room.

I'm creating something that becomes part of the story of the room.

How art changes the feeling of a room

A room can have beautiful furniture, carefully chosen materials and perfect styling, and still feel like something is missing.

Sometimes that missing piece is art.

A colourful contemporary painting can become the emotional anchor of a room. It can introduce movement into a space, bring warmth to a neutral interior or create a moment that draws your eye the moment you walk through the door.

Think of it like music.

The room might already have all the instruments.

But the artwork is what changes the rhythm.

And that's why I don't think you should choose artwork simply because it “goes with” your home.

Choose it because it makes you feel something.

The best artwork doesn't always match

One of the biggest mistakes people can make when choosing art is trying too hard to make everything match.

The sofa is blue, so we need blue art.

The cushions are green, so we need green art.

The rug has a little bit of pink in it, so perhaps the painting should have pink too.

Of course, colour can create beautiful cohesion.

But sometimes the most interesting piece in a room is the one that doesn't quite belong.

Think of it like a dinner party.

If everyone says the same thing, wears the same thing and agrees with everything everyone else says, it's probably going to be a pretty boring dinner.

You need the person who walks in wearing something unexpected.

The person who tells the story nobody else would tell.

The person who makes everyone laugh.

Art can be that person in a room.

It can be the unexpected note that makes everything else come alive.

Why I love hearing how collectors connect with a painting

One of my favourite things about being an artist isn't actually selling a painting.

It's finding out why someone wanted it.

I recently had a collector connect deeply with one of my paintings, Whispers from the Blue Dot.

There was something about the painting that spoke to him personally.

And that is the magic of original art.

I can create the painting.

I can give it a title.

I can tell you what I felt while I was making it.

But once it enters your home, it becomes part of your story.

Maybe it reminds you of a person.

Maybe it reminds you of a place.

Maybe it represents a chapter of your life you never want to forget.

Or perhaps it simply makes you happy every time you walk past it.

That matters.

Because you don't just buy the painting.

You buy the feeling.

What I tell people who are nervous about buying colourful art

Colour can feel scary.

Especially if your home is relatively neutral.

You might look at a vibrant contemporary painting and think:

“I love it... but where would I put it?”

My answer is usually:

Don't start with where it will go. Start with how it makes you feel.

Because if you choose the artwork first, you can build around it.

A painting can become the starting point for cushions, a rug, a throw, a wall colour or even the atmosphere of an entire room.

Instead of asking:

“Does this match my house?”

try asking:

“Does this feel like my life?”

That is a much more interesting question.

How to choose art for your home

If you're looking for original artwork for your home, these are the questions I'd start with.

1. What do you want the room to feel like?

Calm? Energetic? Joyful? Sophisticated? Playful? Dramatic?

Start with emotion, not colour.

2. What do you keep looking at?

When you're viewing artwork, notice which pieces you naturally return to.

That reaction is worth paying attention to.

3. Does the artwork tell you something?

You don't need to understand a painting intellectually.

Sometimes you simply need to feel something.

4. Will you still love it when the trend changes?

Your home will evolve.

Furniture will change.

Colours will come and go.

Choose art that has a deeper connection for you than simply being “on trend”.

5. Can you imagine living with it?

Imagine walking past it every morning.

Imagine seeing it after a long day.

Imagine your friends asking you about it.

Imagine your children growing up with it.

The right piece can become part of the history of your home.

For interior designers: think beyond the colour palette

For interior designers, original art offers another opportunity.

A room can be beautifully resolved and still feel slightly unfinished.

The furniture is right.

The materials are right.

The proportions are right.

The lighting is right.

But something is missing.

Sometimes that something is art.

Not artwork chosen at the very end because there happens to be a wall left.

Artwork considered as part of the story of the space.

A large expressive painting can become the emotional anchor of a room.

A smaller work can create a moment of discovery.

A series can connect different spaces throughout a home.

And an original artwork can give a beautifully designed interior something that cannot be replicated from a catalogue:

personality.

That is where I love working with designers and collectors.

Because the painting and the room can have a conversation.

The interior creates the stage.

The artwork brings the energy.

Art should remind you who you are

I think this becomes even more important as we get older.

There is a particular point in life when you start asking yourself different questions.

Not What should I do?

But:

What do I actually want?

Not:

What will everyone else think?

But:

What makes me feel alive?

That is a big part of what sits underneath my work.

My paintings are about growth, resilience, transformation, freedom and joy.

They are little reminders that life isn't something we are supposed to watch from the sidelines.

We're supposed to get in it.

Say yes.

Take the trip.

Dance badly.

Drink the champagne.

Laugh until your stomach hurts.

Make the painting.

Change your mind.

Start again.

Live fully.

And perhaps that's what I really want my paintings to do when they enter someone's home.

Not simply decorate a wall.

But become a little visual nudge that says:

Don't forget to live.

Your home should look like your life

I don't think a beautiful home needs to look perfect.

I think it should feel lived in.

It should have stories.

It should have things that make you smile.

It should have something unexpected.

And it should contain pieces that remind you of who you are and who you're becoming.

That's what I want my art to be.

Not background noise.

A reminder.

A spark.

A little piece of colour and courage on the wall.

Because your home isn't a showroom.

It's the backdrop to your life.

And I think the art on your walls should be worthy of the story you're living.
